Mt Field National Park
Russell Falls is one of Tasmania’s most famous natural attractions. For over a century, people have flocked to this beautiful spot, about 2 hours from Hobart.
There are so many things to do in Tasmania; Mt Field is definitely one of the highlights.
Tasmania’s first National Park has plenty to see and do. As well as Russell Falls, people can hike for miles, camp beneath the gum trees, spot loads of wildlife and experience glow worms along the waterfalls’ path at night.
The National Park Hotel is a good accommodation option, offering a country-style pub with shared facilities, known for reasonably priced meals and its proximity to Mt. Field National Park.
The walk to the falls is not too far and is relatively easy, following along beside the stream beneath wonderful tree ferns.
Steps lead up past the Russell Falls viewing platform to the top of the falls. Continuing from the top is a ‘Tall Trees’ walk with plenty of interpretive signage and some spectacular trees.

Russell Falls
The iconic view of Russell Falls! Once upon a time, visitors could run rampant on the ledges; we did as kids (resulting in a concussion for me after slipping over when I was about 10 years old). It is a good thing that we can now all enjoy the falls without people in the many photos that get snapped!

Top of Russell Falls!

See if you can measure the tall trees using the ‘Clinometer’…
Ancient tree stumps and trunks can be seen along the walking tracks, slowly decaying and providing a life source for the forest…

That view of the falls is just so amazing. Simply marvelous and the trail going there is just as grand. The walk to the top is so worth it! Can you let me know the best season to visit this location? I am sure that summer is out of the picture but I would appreciate knowing the ideal month. Thank you in advance!
Hi Ralph, Summer is a great time to go, but then when the winter rains come it would be spectacular too (and not so busy). Any time of the year is lovely really.
