Best Portable Camping Coffee Maker

Which is the best portable coffee machine?

It’s the same coffee maker that you can also use at home. Enjoying a fabulous coffee when camping, on road trips, or travelling anywhere should not be a compromise. We review two of the best espresso coffee makers available.

There is no coffee snobbery involved in this review, either you love brewed coffee or prefer the convenience and taste of the instant version. This review of the best coffee makers to take camping is for the folks who prefer their coffee brewed.

Whilst part of this review is featuring the Avanti stove-top espresso maker, a number of quality brands are available on the market. The ones made of stainless steel with a heavy base, in our opinion, provide the best results. We use an Avanti daily, which is why it has been named in this review.

Avanti Stove Top Coffee Maker

My first espresso maker, of this type, was a cheap aluminium version. The coffee tasted horrible. Years later I bought our Avanti Brand Espresso Coffee Maker and have never had a bad coffee since. The Stove Top Espresso coffee makers come in various sizes. The better quality ones are made from seamless stainless steel, with a good heavy base. Whilst relatively expensive, they will last many years, even with constant use. Our Avanti has been to the centre of Australia and down south to Tassie, the rest of the time it is used every day in our home.

How does the Espresso coffee maker work?

It is used on a stove top which can be gas or electric or on a camp stove. We have even used ours on hot coals when camping (though that may not be under manufacturers guidelines). Steam pressure is built up to brew the coffee with plenty of flavours and no bitterness.

The espresso pot has 3 parts: 1.The base section which unscrews is for water. 2. The middle funnel section where the coffee is added then the stainless steel filter placed on top (we first use a paper filter that is made for the AeroPress then the steel one which ensures no grounds in the coffee at all) 3. The top chamber where the coffee collects once brewed.

  • Seamless stainless steel construction.
  • Various sizes available.
  • Comes with stainless steel filter, though, paper filters from the AeroPress can be used along with the metal filter (on smaller model).
  • Good quality ones can last many years even with constant use.

CONCLUSION: Which Coffee Maker is best depends on where it will be used most. The AeroPress is ideal for all occasions where water can be boiled. The Avanti or other stove top coffee makers are ideal for all times except when the user only has access to a kettle and no stove top.
